A Challenging Year in India
Despite another demanding year, SOCH continues to expand its community programmes and make a tangible difference in the lives of children. Of the two initiatives we support, the Rakshyak Programme remains an especially effective way to reduce trafficking. In October alone, the team rescued sixteen children from dangerous situations, including seven referred directly by Khurda and Bhubaneswar railway staff.
Meanwhile, the Punarjivan Programme, based in Jatni, has begun its tenth residential edu-bridge camp for children who have missed out on formal schooling. Some of the new attendees are graduates from SOCH's sister programme, which helps children recover from alcohol and substance addictions. Together, these initiatives show how consistent support can truly change lives.
Diwali and Dr Baylis' Visit to PUSS
At PUSS, FOCO Trustee Dr Philippa Baylis made a self-funded visit in October that was warmly welcomed by the school's 380 pupils. Her two-month stay coincided with the celebration of Diwali, and she joined the children for many other joyful events during her time there. Her visit brought renewed energy and connection between FOCO and the school community.
Children's Day Celebrations and Show
October also saw the celebration of Gandhi Jayanti, with essay, speech and drawing competitions organised at the school to promote Gandhian values. Prizes were awarded to the winners to encourage their efforts.
On 14th November, the school celebrated Children's Day thanks to a one-off donation from Dr Baylis' Quaker Friends. The day was filled with happiness and laughter, with a celebratory meal enjoyed by all, a magician's performance, and a special invitation extended to disabled children from a nearby Child Care Institute to share in the fun.
FOCO's Current Financial Situation
FOCO has continued to support both PUSS School and SOCH at similar financial levels for several years. However, 2024 has been a challenging year for the charity. In response to a government drive to reduce foreign aid, India has introduced tighter foreign currency regulations. As a result, PUSS—like many other well-known charities—has faced delays in the renewal of its FCRA registration, making the process of transferring funds more complex.
Despite these challenges, there is still cause for optimism. The school now benefits from some support from Indian companies, including the Tech Mahindra Foundation. In addition, an Odisha-based NGO called VASA, which holds an active FCRA registration, has partnered with PUSS to help facilitate its financial operations. We will continue to keep supporters updated as the situation develops.
We Need Your Support
There is no easy way to say this: we are running low on funds. FOCO's continued support for the children of Odisha depends on the generosity of donors like you.
Small charities rely on regular giving through Direct Debit donors. Even a modest monthly contribution—perhaps the price of a coffee—can make a lasting impact. If you do not yet donate in this way, please ask us for a Direct Debit mandate, and if you are eligible, consider adding Gift Aid to increase the value of your support.
One-off donations are also immensely helpful. At this time of year, when many people are thinking about giving to those less fortunate, you might consider funding a specific project such as the Rakshyak Programme, which helps prevent child trafficking. We would be happy to provide more information on costs and needs.
We also encourage supporters to think about legacy giving. Including FOCO in your will is a simple but deeply meaningful way to leave a lasting legacy that will continue to transform lives for years to come. If you would like to explore this, please speak with us—and with a legal professional—about how to include FOCO in your plans.
There are many other ways to help. Whether you enjoy writing, organising events, fundraising, or simply sharing ideas, we would love to hear from you. Every contribution makes a difference.

And Finally
To all who have given already—or who plan to do so again—please know that your time, generosity and kindness are deeply appreciated. Your support allows us to continue improving the lives of children in Odisha.
We wish all our supporters a Merry Christmas and a prosperous 2025.
